The benefits of paint protection film

What PPF does.

Paint protection film is a clear, multi-layered film bonded over the paint. Stone chips, road grime and light scratches hit the film instead of the paint. Grime washes off, light scratches self-heal with warmth, and the colour underneath stays visible.

Stone-chip protection

Road grime and stones mark the film, not the paint.

The film is multi-layered: a self-healing top coat over a thick TPU layer. The TPU is the sacrificial layer. Even if the top coat is compromised, the TPU underneath takes the damage instead of the paint.

A deep impact can still mark the film and, rarely, the paint under it. The film on that panel is replaced on its own, and we check the paint before anything else is quoted.

Self-healing PPF

Light scratches and swirl marks disappear with heat.

A proprietary self-healing top coat, not a plain urethane surface. It is hydrophobic and oleophobic, so water beads off and oils and grime do not bond to it, and warmth from the sun or a heat gun closes light scratches and wash swirls.

Cuts through the top coat do not heal. We check those and replace the panel's film if needed.

  • Hydrophobic surface

Water beads and grime washes off with less effort. Regular washing still matters.

  • Chemical resistance

Bird droppings and insect residue sit on the film, not the paint. Clean them off promptly.

  • UV resistance

Film choice matters in WA sun. We go through the selected film's UV rating with you.

  • Resale

Original paint with no stone chips holds its value, and it is the first thing a buyer checks.

Self-healing, water repellence and stain resistance vary by film. Compare the film as well as the coverage.

Film and finish

Showroom gloss or stealth matte. The choice is yours.

Would you go for a showroom gloss, or a modern stealth matte? Decide on your own car, not on a swatch: we fit a free sample to your paint and you drive home with it.

Protect the colour

Clear gloss PPF

Clear gloss film brings out the depth of the original colour and gives the car a freshly detailed look. On most paints it also softens the fine rippled texture called orange peel.

Change the sheen

Matte PPF

Matte film changes the sheen and keeps the colour. Reflections soften, so the body lines read more strongly, and the finish changes as the light moves across the panels.

PPF for boats

We also fit clear hull protection film to boats, in the same bay. See what we do on the boat wraps page.

Coverage and pricing

Three PPF packages, one installation quality.

PPF is priced by the coverage, the film and the vehicle, so the packages below are shown separately for 4WDs and utes and for passenger cars and SUVs. Every package starts with a wash and a light polish of the painted panels, so the film goes on over corrected paint.

What affects the price

Coverage, the vehicle's make, model and variant, the OEM colour, your choice of film and the paint condition. A car that needs a full cut and polish, or more involved hardware removal, takes extra work beyond the standard preparation. We cannot fit film over flaking, sun-faded or damaged paint; those panels need repainting first.

The same factors across every service: the vinyl wrap cost guide. Driving a 4WD or ute? The 4WD paint protection film page covers touring, towing and accessories.

The PPF installation

We take PPF installation further than the industry standard.

We remove the hardware, run the film underneath it and wrap every corner instead of notching it. It takes longer, and the result is a finish you cannot see and edges that do not collect dust or lift when the car is washed.

We remove the hardware

What we do

On most PPF jobs the door handles, mirrors, window trims, vents, grilles and badges come off, and the film goes onto the bare panel underneath. The hardware then goes back on over the film.

The benefit

No cut-outs and no joins around the hardware. The film is invisible, and there is no edge beside a handle or a badge for dirt to build up along.

We wrap the corners and tuck the edges

What we do

The industry standard is a notch cut at each corner and a template that stops a couple of millimetres short of the panel edge. We use extended templates that wrap the film around the edge and tuck it under the trim.

The benefit

No seams to lift and no exposed edge. The corners stay clean through years of washing, pressure washers and red dust.

Why we fit it this way

  • Beautiful on the day, and invisible

The car comes back looking the way it did in the showroom, and you cannot find the film on it.

  • Built for years, not months

No joins, no seams and no exposed edges, so there is nowhere for dust to collect and far less for a wash to catch on. Pressure lances still stay away from every edge; the care guide has the distances.

  • Worth the extra time

Fitting this way is slower and more intricate than a standard install. The longevity and the look are why we do it.

How it works

Your PPF installation, step by step.

What happens from the first conversation to the follow-up check, and how long the car is with us.

  1. Porsche 911 Carrera S on the Vinyl Wrapz workshop floor in Osborne Park, in for paint protection film

    Step 1 of 6

    First conversation and workshop visit

Workshop or phone · about 15 minutes for the sample

Call, book online or come in. We talk about the car, how you use it and what you want covered, then recommend a package and a film.

If you can get to the workshop, we fit a free gloss or matte sample while you are here, assess the paint and confirm the coverage, the quote and the booking dates.

A Full Front is usually a three-day booking and the larger packages a week. Ask about a courtesy car when you book; we have them, subject to availability.

  2. Washing a bonnet with a wash mitt at Vinyl Wrapz

    Step 2 of 6

    Two-stage wash and deep clean

    Day one

The car gets a two-stage wash and a decontamination to lift road grime, tar and old wax, including around the trims and panel edges where dirt collects.

Clean paint shows us its true condition: the chips, swirls and old repairs that need dealing with before any film goes on.

  3. Machine polishing a bonnet before film at Vinyl Wrapz

    Step 3 of 6

    Polish and paint preparation

    Included in every package

A clay bar and a light machine polish of the painted panels is standard, new cars included. The paint is corrected first, then the film goes on over it, so the finish you see is the corrected paint under clear film.

Deeper swirls or scratches that need a full cut and polish are quoted and agreed with you first. Small stone chips can be touched up with colour-matched paint before the film goes on.

  4. Paint protection film being fitted to a bonnet under the hex lighting at Vinyl Wrapz

    Step 4 of 6

Fitting the film, panel by panel

Hardware off, film on, hardware back on

Handles, mirrors, trims and badges come off the covered panels. The film goes on across the agreed panels, worked around the shape of each one, using templates extended to wrap the panel edges.

Edges and corners are wrapped and tucked wherever the panel allows, the fit is checked panel by panel, and the hardware goes back on over the film.

  5. The inspection bay at Vinyl Wrapz with its hex lighting wall

    Step 5 of 6

    Finishing

Drying and inspection before you collect

The booking includes drying time and an inspection before you collect. We check every edge, corner and refitted part under the inspection lights and fix anything that needs it before handover.

The film keeps settling for a week or two after collection. A light haze under the film in the first days is normal and clears as it dries.

  6. White Ford Everest with new-car paint protection film outside the Vinyl Wrapz workshop

    Step 6 of 6

Handover and the 1 to 2 week check-up

    Collection day

At collection we walk you through the finished work and how to wash and look after the film, with the care guide to take home.

We book a check-up 1 to 2 weeks later. Once the film has dried we inspect it again and seal the edges. If you have a 4WD trip planned, tell us and we will time the booking around it.

Planning a trip around the booking?

Confirm the dates with us first, allow for the 1 to 2 week check-up, and ask about a courtesy car when you book.

Questions before booking

Paint protection film FAQs

Last reviewed 1 October 2026

Can PPF be fitted to a used car?

Yes, and we assess the paint first. Existing chips, scratches and previous repairs need looking at before any film goes on. A light polish of the painted panels is included in every package. Deeper correction, such as a full cut and polish, is quoted and agreed with you before the installation, and small chips can be touched up with colour-matched paint. What we cannot do is fit film over flaking, sun-faded or damaged paint; those panels need repainting first.

Will I be able to see the film?

From a normal viewing distance, no. Up close, an edge or a join can still be visible on some panels. Taking the handles, badges and trims off lets the film finish underneath them, which is what removes most of the visible lines, and wrapping the edges deals with most of the rest. Panel shape, access and the coverage you choose decide where the film can finish.

Is PPF the same as ceramic coating?

No. PPF is a physical film over the paint, and it is what takes the stone chips and light scratches. A ceramic coating is a surface treatment that adds gloss, easier washing and chemical resistance, with no impact protection. Plenty of cars run film on the front and a coating over the rest. Our PPF vs ceramic guide goes through the decision properly.

What if a panel of film gets damaged?

Bring it in and we will look at it. Light scratches heal with heat. A deep cut or a chip through the top coat will not heal, so that panel's film comes off and a new piece goes on, without repainting. We also check whether the paint underneath was marked.

How do I wash a car with PPF?

Wash it the way you would wash good paint: regularly, with a clean mitt, and keep pressure jets away from the film edges. Deal with bird droppings and insect residue promptly. Hydrophobic film beads water, but it still needs washing and drying; beading on its own does not stop water spots. We go through the care instructions for your film at handover.

What warranty comes with it?

Two things cover the work: the film manufacturer's warranty and our own workmanship cover, and they are separate. We go through the terms for your chosen film and the installation before you book, so you know what is covered and for how long.
