Paint Protection Film (PPF) vs Ceramic Coating

Neither is better. They solve different problems. Paint protection film is the only one of the two that stops stone chips and scratches, and it self-heals light marks with warmth. A ceramic coating adds gloss, sheds water and dirt and resists UV, droppings and bore water, and every coating maker says in its own FAQ that it does not stop chips. So the question is which risk your car carries. Freeway and gravel kilometres point to film. Wash-and-wear on a garaged car points to a coating. Many Perth cars get film on the front and a coating over the lot.

Need, no. Benefit from, often. The film takes the impacts and the coating handles the chemistry and the washing, so they do not overlap. The usual combination is PPF on the front, or the front and sides, with a coating over the whole car including the film. If the budget only stretches to one, choose by your biggest risk: freeway and gravel kilometres point to film, wash-and-wear and bore water point to a coating. We tell you which when we see the car.

No. A coating is a couple of microns thick and rigid, and absorbing a stone at freeway speed needs something thick and soft, which is what paint protection film is. Gtechniq's own FAQ says a coating cannot give meaningful protection against stone chipping. GYEON says film is the answer for chips and a coating is the complement. Ceramic Pro and CarPro publish the same in their FAQs. Any product that promises chip protection from a bottle is overreaching.

Yes, and it is common. The coating has to be one formulated for film, not the paint version, so it bonds to the urethane without affecting the self-healing. It adds the beading and the easy washing to the film. Plan on redoing it: the makers rate their film coatings at up to two years, and over Perth summers we see 12 to 18 months. If that is the main reason you want the coating, the 12-year film with the top coat built in is usually the better buy.

Film. Our gloss PPF carries a 10 or 12-year manufacturer warranty in writing against yellowing, cracking, bubbling and delamination, which also answers the old worry about film going yellow: modern full urethane films are warranted against it. Coating life depends on the product tier and the washing. Consumer sprays last about a year, professional coatings around two to five years, and top-tier products such as Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra carry a nine-year guarantee tied to accredited application and a yearly inspection. For a car you are keeping, driven on Perth freeways or country roads, yes. A stone chip through the clear coat on a bonnet or bumper means a respray of that panel, and every respray takes the car further from original paint. Film takes those chips on the covered panels, self-heals the light marks, and comes off cleanly later with the paint as it was, which matters at resale. On a car that lives in a garage and does careful suburban kilometres, a coating may be the better spend. We tell you which when we see the car.

A coating, on the day. Film is priced by the panels covered, from Full Front through to the whole car, and there is a lot more material and fitting time in it. A coating is priced mainly by the correction the paint needs first. Over the life of the car the picture shifts: one panel of film replaced after a stone strike costs less than a respray, and film is not reapplied on a schedule: it stays on until it is damaged or removed. It is not scratch-proof. The 9H on the bottle is a pencil-hardness rating: the cured layer resists a 9H pencil dragged across it. In practice that means the slick surface reduces the fine marring that washing puts into bare clear coat. It does not stop car-park scrapes, keys or trolley strikes, and it does not stop stone chips. GYEON has said publicly that 9H is widely misunderstood in marketing. Self-healing is a film property, not a coating one.

Yes, with the right product. A standard paint coating can add sheen to a matte or satin surface, which is exactly what you paid to avoid. GYEON and Gtechniq both make coatings for matte and satin film, formulated to protect the texture without changing the look, and the same rule applies to a matte wrap. On a matte car the coating is also the answer to water spotting, which shows more on a flat finish. No wax of any kind goes on matte film; it fills the texture and leaves shiny patches.

Before a coating, yes, if the paint has visible defects. A coating locks in whatever sits under it and can only come off by machine, so swirls and etching get sealed in. Before film, a light polish of the painted panels is included in every package, because the film sits over the finish and shows it. Deeper correction is quoted and agreed with you first for either. What we cannot do is fit film or a coating over flaking, faded or damaged paint; that needs repainting.
