On the road and off it

What PPF does on a 4WD.

Paint protection film is a clear, multi-layered film bonded over the paint. It takes the small stones, branch contact and road grime that would otherwise reach the paint, and the colour underneath stays visible. Whether the vehicle is heading down a narrow track, towing a caravan or driving around Perth, the useful starting point is which panels you want covered.

Stone chips and bush scratches

Stones and branches mark the film, not the paint.

The front takes the stones off gravel roads and road trains. On tight tracks, branches drag along the doors and rear quarters at every height, which is why our 4WD package covers the full-height sides. The film is a self-healing top coat over a thick TPU layer, and the TPU takes the strike so the paint underneath does not chip.

A severe impact or a deep cut can still reach the paint. That panel's film is replaced without repainting.

Self-healing PPF

Light scratches and wash swirls disappear with heat.

Fine marks from scrub and from washing sit in the self-healing top coat and close up with warmth from the sun or a heat gun. After a trip, the sides look right again instead of carrying a fresh set of pinstripes.

Deep cuts through the top coat do not heal. We check those and replace the panel's film if needed.

Easier cleaning after a trip

Red dust and mud wash off the film with less effort.

The top coat is hydrophobic, so water beads and dust and mud release with less rubbing. Regular washing and drying still matter after dusty driving, and rinsing the loose dust off before a mitt touches the panel matters most.

Water beading does not prevent water spots. Surface properties vary by film, and we go through your film's care at handover.

Self-healing, water repellence and stain resistance vary by film. Compare the film as well as the coverage.

Finishes on 4WDs we have protected

Clear gloss keeps the colour. Matte changes the whole look.

Coverage decides which panels are protected. The finish decides how those panels look. Compare the two on real 4WDs, then try a sample on your own paint before you choose.

Protect the colour

Clear gloss PPF

Clear gloss film keeps the original colour visible with a smooth, reflective finish, and on most paints it softens the fine rippled texture called orange peel. It suits owners who want a new 4WD to keep looking new.

Change the sheen

Matte PPF

Matte film softens reflections and changes the sheen while keeping the colour underneath visible. Uncovered panels keep their original gloss, so if you are converting a gloss 4WD to matte, Full Vehicle is the coverage to discuss for a consistent finish across the painted exterior.

Coverage details

Door handles are not filmed. Non-painted trims, canopies, bull bars and other accessories are assessed separately. Your written quote confirms the scope.

Match the coverage to your vehicle and plans

Bull bars, roof racks, flares and canopies affect access and what needs protecting. Tell us about your accessories, towing and off-road use, and how long you plan to keep the vehicle. If you tow on gravel, we check the rear coverage with you.

The final price depends on the make, model and variant, the OEM colour, your choice of film, the paint condition and access around accessories.

Mainly worried about front-end chips? Full Front for a 4WD is on the paint protection film page. The same factors across every service: the vinyl wrap cost guide.

The installation details

Coverage that reaches the edges.

How the film finishes around a bonnet, a door or a fender matters as much as the panel it covers. We extend the templates to wrap accessible edges and corners, and we fit the film under the hardware we can remove.

Extended templates, wrapped edges

What we do

We use templates and extend them to wrap accessible edges and corners: bonnet notches, fender ends, door edges and boot lids. Panel shape and access set the limits, and some edges or joins can remain visible.

The benefit

The film reaches the panel edges where chips and scratches start, finishes discreetly, and leaves less exposed edge for red dirt to collect along. Wrapped door edges also take the everyday knocks of getting in and out.

Film beneath handles, trims and badges

What we do

We remove suitable hardware from the panels being covered, fit the film underneath, then refit it. Door handles, window trims and badges are the common ones; the parts we can remove depend on the vehicle.

The benefit

No cut-outs around the hardware and no film edge beside it. The finish is harder to spot, and there is less exposed adhesive for dust to build up along or a wash to catch.

Film timed around your accessories

What we do

Tell us about bull bars, flares, side steps, snorkels, racks and canopies before you book either job. Depending on what the part covers and what it bolts through, the film sometimes goes on before the accessory and sometimes after.

The benefit

Deeper coverage where it matters and no unnecessary hardware removal. Your quote states what is included and what is assessed separately.

Why the edges matter on a 4WD

  • Discreet on the day

The vehicle comes back looking the way it arrived, with the film finishing at the edges rather than across the panel.

  • Edges that last

Less exposed edge and adhesive for red dirt to collect along, and better-protected edges through years of use and washing.

  • Worth the extra time

Fitting this way is slower than a standard install. The finish and the years of use are why we do it.

Keep pressure jets away from film edges and follow the care guidance for your chosen film.

4WD PPF installation in Perth

Your PPF installation, step by step.

From the inspection on arrival to the check after collection, this is how we prepare and protect your 4WD. Before it arrives, we agree the film, the coverage and the written quote, and plan the booking around your travel dates.

  1. The inspection bay at Vinyl Wrapz with its hex lighting wall

    Step 1 of 6

    Inspection on arrival

    Paint condition and touring setup

We walk around the vehicle and check the bonnet, doors, fenders and rear panels for stone chips, bush pinstripes, previous repairs and existing coatings. Even a new 4WD gets a paint inspection.

We confirm the agreed coverage around your bull bar, flares, snorkel or canopy, so the work suits your actual setup. Tell us about any accessories still to be fitted.

  2. Washing a bonnet with a wash mitt at Vinyl Wrapz

    Step 2 of 6

    Wash and decontamination

    Panels, trims and edges

We wash and decontaminate the vehicle before fitting. On a 4WD that means paying attention to the dirt around trims, panel gaps and the edges we need to wrap.

Removing that build-up gives us clean surfaces to work with, including the less visible areas where the film will finish.

  3. Machine polishing a bonnet before film at Vinyl Wrapz

    Step 3 of 6

    Polish and paint preparation

    A finish worth protecting

A light polish of suitable painted panels is part of the preparation, new vehicles included. We assess existing bush marks and chips first and agree any extra correction with you before starting.

Film follows the surface beneath it. We explain which marks can be improved and what may remain visible.

  4. Paint protection film being fitted to a bonnet under the hex lighting at Vinyl Wrapz

    Step 4 of 6

    Installation

Full panels and accessible wrapped edges

We fit your chosen coverage using templates extended around accessible corners and edges. Suitable handles, trims and badges come off so we can fit film underneath, then go back on.

On a 4WD, that means protection continuing around vulnerable panel edges and less exposed adhesive for red dirt to collect along. Access and panel shape determine where the film finishes.

  5. The wide bay at the Vinyl Wrapz workshop under hex lighting

    Step 5 of 6

    Finishing

Drying and inspection before you collect

We allow time for the installation to dry, then inspect the panels, corners, film edges and refitted hardware under the workshop lights. Anything that needs attention is addressed before collection.

Full Front and Sides and Full Vehicle usually need a one-week workshop booking. We confirm the timing for your 4WD and discuss your departure date before you book.

  6. White Ford Everest with new-car paint protection film outside the Vinyl Wrapz workshop

    Step 6 of 6

    Handover

Care for the next trip and beyond

At handover we show you the coverage and explain when and how to wash your film, including how to deal with dusty trips and how to look after the edges.

We arrange a check-up 1 to 2 weeks later. Once the film has dried, we inspect it and complete the final edge sealing. If you are travelling from regional WA, plan this return visit with us before setting your itinerary.

4WD paint protection questions

PPF for bush tracks, gravel and WA conditions.

Last reviewed 1 October 2026

Answers for 4WD owners comparing protection, planning a trip or looking after film once it is fitted.

Is PPF worth it for a 4WD used on bush tracks?

It is worth considering if you want to keep the original paint while using the vehicle off-road. Film gives the covered panels a replaceable barrier against small stones and light branch contact: the marks sit in the film, and a badly damaged panel of film is replaced rather than repainted. Our Full Front and Sides package combines front-end protection with the full-height doors and the rear quarters or tub sides. Full Vehicle adds the roof and the remaining rear panels. The right scope depends on your tracks, your towing and how long you plan to keep the vehicle.

Will PPF protect my 4WD from bush scratches and pinstriping?

PPF protects the covered doors, fenders and rear quarters from light scrub contact. Fine marks in a self-healing top coat close up with warmth, which keeps the film looking right between trips. Deeper scratches can remain in the film, and a severe cut can reach the paint. If a branch damages one section, bring the vehicle in and we will inspect it and tell you whether that panel's film needs replacing.

Does PPF help prevent stone chips on gravel roads or when towing?

Yes. PPF absorbs small stone strikes on the covered panels, including the bonnet, bumper, fenders and sides. If you tow on gravel, talk to us about the rear of the vehicle as well: Full Front and Sides covers the sides and leading edges of the rear bumper and leaves the tailgate and the rest of the rear bumper exposed, while Full Vehicle includes those painted rear panels. Large or sharp impacts can still damage the film and the paint.

How do I wash red dust and mud off a 4WD with PPF?

Rinse away the loose dust and soften the mud before a clean wash mitt touches the panel, then rinse and dry. Avoid rubbing dry grime across the film or pointing pressure jets at its edges. Our wrapped edges and the film beneath the hardware leave less exposed adhesive for red dirt to collect along, but the film still needs regular care after dusty trips; stain resistance does not make it stain-proof. Follow our washing and care guide and the instructions for your film.

Will PPF protect my 4WD's paint from harsh WA sun and UV?

UV performance depends on the film. Resistance to the film yellowing and protection against the paint fading are different properties, so we explain what your chosen film covers before fitting it. Tell us if the 4WD lives outside or spends long periods touring in the sun, and we will go through the suitable film, its care and its warranty for that exposure. Existing sun-damaged or failing paint needs assessment before PPF can be fitted.

How much does 4WD paint protection film cost in Perth?

Our two 4WD packages start at the prices shown above, inclusive of GST: Full Front and Sides, and Full Vehicle. The final figure depends on the vehicle, the coverage, the film, the paint condition and access around accessories, so request a written quote for your 4WD with the make, model and year and photos of any bull bar, flares, snorkel or canopy. We assess any extra paint correction before quoting it, so you know the preparation and coverage included. The vinyl wrap cost guide carries the same figures beside every other service.

Can you fit PPF to a used 4WD with existing bush scratches?

Yes, if the paint is suitable. We inspect the existing pinstripes, stone chips, coatings and previous repairs before recommending the preparation. A light polish improves suitable surface marks; deeper damage may need separate correction or repair, because PPF does not repair the scratches beneath it. Tell us about any repainted panels, since paint condition and the film's warranty terms affect whether we can cover them.

Should I fit a bull bar, snorkel or canopy before PPF?

Talk to us about the accessory plan before booking either job. These parts affect panel access and where the film can finish, so we advise on the order for your particular 4WD and confirm any removal or refitting needed. Painted flares, a canopy and a bull bar are not automatically treated as the same surface as the body panels: your quote identifies what is included and what is assessed separately.

How long will PPF last on a touring 4WD?

Film choice, sun exposure, washing and physical wear all affect its condition. A 4WD that regularly brushes through scrub may need the film on one panel replaced before the rest of the vehicle needs attention. We explain the film manufacturer's warranty and our own workmanship cover before the installation, and they are separate things: the warranty period is not a promised service life, and it does not cover every stone strike and branch scratch.

Can you install PPF in Perth before my next WA road trip?

We install 4WD PPF at our Osborne Park workshop. Full Front and Sides and Full Vehicle usually need a one-week booking, followed by a check-up 1 to 2 weeks after collection for inspection and the final edge sealing. Tell us your departure date early so we can confirm suitable timing. If you are visiting from regional WA, start with a phone consultation and plan both visits before committing to travel dates.
