The union approached Vinyl Wrapz Perth to bring their powerful tribute artwork to life on a Toyota Hilux, creating a mobile statement piece that reflects the values, identity, and strength of Western Australia’s firefighter community.

This was no standard ute wrap — it was a custom-designed partial wrap, featuring two stylised firefighter heads rising from a background of swirling smoke. The visual aimed to highlight the bravery and unity of the men and women the UFUWA represents. While the core design was provided by the client, our team stepped in to help refine specific elements — in particular, adjusting the smoke effect to make it more defined and dynamic once printed on solid white vinyl.

This project was delivered in partnership with the United Professional Firefighters Union of Western Australia (UFU WA) — the official representative body for WA’s professional firefighters. Their request was simple but powerful: create a branded vehicle that celebrates their members, communicates their presence in the community, and does so with respect, strength, and style.

The vehicle chosen for this wrap was a Toyota Hilux, known for its durability and versatility. It’s a fitting vehicle for a union that represents those who face some of the most demanding and dangerous work conditions in the state. The goal was to turn this Hilux into a visual extension of the union’s identity — a symbol of protection, honour, and public service.

Project Scope: Toyota Hilux Partial Wrap

The service completed was a partial commercial wrap, focused on the driver and passenger doors and the rear tray sides. The design was provided by the client, featuring two firefighter silhouettes emerging through a rising smoke effect. The theme was clear and emotive — a subtle tribute to the environments in which firefighters operate, executed in a style that remains professional and polished on the road.

Our role at Vinyl Wrapz was to refine, prepare, print, and install the design with the same level of precision and discipline our clients practice every day. This job wasn’t just about branding. It was about bringing forward the identity of a workforce that rarely seeks the spotlight but deserves recognition wherever they go.

Design & Highlights

From the start, the focal point of this job was the smoke effect behind the silhouette graphics. Printed on white wrap vinyl to match the vehicle’s paintwork, the smoke design required precise calibration during prepress to avoid becoming overly light, washed out, or clashing with the vehicle’s base colour. We adjusted contrast levels and opacity through several print passes until the smoke looked balanced — visible enough to be seen from a distance, but soft enough to look realistic.

The silhouettes of the firefighters were placed strategically across the side panels. Their positioning aligned with the Hilux’s natural panel breaks and gaps, creating a sense of movement without disrupting the flow of the design. The choice to use black and grey tones meant that the final aesthetic looked bold without being visually noisy — a clear, powerful message delivered through clean layout and sharp printing.

All printed areas were laminated with a gloss finish, providing UV protection, water resistance, and scratch resistance, while giving the artwork a vivid, high-impact shine under sunlight.

As with all of our commercial wrapping projects, we selected only high-performance wrap film for this installation. This included:

White print-grade wrap vinyl with a durable adhesive base

Knifeless tape application to ensure all cut lines were crisp and free of blade marks

Because this is a working utility vehicle, longevity was a priority — we planned every panel with wear zones in mind and used industry-standard curing time to maximise adhesion before vehicle return.

Installation Challenges

One of the biggest technical challenges with this install was colour matching and edge integration. The vehicle’s paint was a factory white, and our wrap was printed on white film — but even subtle differences in white tones can become visible when a design fades out toward the edges. When the team at Perfmet approached us with their Mitsubishi Evolution 9 rally car, they weren’t after anything basic. This wasn’t just a project about updating a livery — it was about prepping a purpose-built race machine with a new visual identity that matched its engineering pedigree.

From the moment this car rolled into the Vinyl Wrapz workshop, it was clear this wasn’t your average performance vehicle. Fully stripped-out and tuned for competition, this Evo 9 was clad in carbon, fitted with track hardware, and clearly had some kilometres of hard driving behind it.

The brief was to remove the remnants of the previous wrap, create a bold new look, and install a complete, high-end full wrap ready for the pressures of rally stages and public promo alike.

About the Client: Perfmet

Perfmet is a specialist fabrication and metal solutions provider, heavily involved in motorsport sponsorships and competition builds across Australia. Their involvement in rally racing showcases the same values they bring to their business: toughness, performance, and precision.

This Mitsubishi Evo 9 rally car is part of their broader competition fleet, flying the Perfmet name at high speeds across some of Australia’s toughest rally stages.

The Vehicle: Mitsubishi Evo 9 Rally Car

The Mitsubishi Evo 9 is an icon — a turbocharged, all-wheel-drive machine built to dominate twisty mountain roads and loose gravel rally stages. The version we worked on was fully rally-prepped:

Full roll cage
Lightweight carbon fibre door cards
Racing harnesses and stripped interior
Aftermarket aero
Rally-spec wheels and suspension
Previous wrap still partly intact in high-heat areas

This wasn’t just a showpiece. It was a hard-driven race vehicle that needed a wrap capable of holding up to competition use and repeated public exposure at events and meets.

The Job: Remove, Restore, Rewrap

Unlike a factory-fresh daily driver, race cars come with history. This Evo had already been wrapped once before — and that wrap had partially fused with the bodywork due to rally-stage abuse, UV exposure, and extreme temperatures.

Before we could begin applying anything new, we needed to:

Remove old wrap fragments, including vinyl burned into lower rocker panels
Carefully clean adhesive residue without damaging underlying paint
Repair minor panel inconsistencies for smooth reapplication
Rework surface prep in areas around the carbon fibre trim and tight corners

Only then could we start installing the new custom design, which had been developed in-house by the Vinyl Wrapz team to align with Perfmet’s bold, metallic-heavy visual direction.

Design: Industrial Grit Meets Racing Confidence

We knew the Perfmet Evo needed to look fast standing still — but it also had to reflect the brand’s identity: engineering-driven, bold, and unapologetically sharp.

The final layout included:

High-contrast, angled design language inspired by airflow and speed
Industrial-style elements like rivet-inspired overlays and diagonal striping
Clear, high-visibility Perfmet branding across the doors and rear
Darker lower tones to mask stage grime and dust, blending into the track environment
Brighter upper body colours to stand out during fast movement and onlookers’ photos

Rather than lean on racing clichés like checkerboard patterns or generic rally fonts, we aimed to build a look that’s recognisably Perfmet — confident, industrial, and no-nonsense.

Materials & Application Strategy

Race vehicles have different wrap demands than regular cars. Not only do they take more physical abuse, but they’re often photographed and filmed under varying light conditions — and sometimes even during night stages with artificial lighting.

Materials selected:

High-tack motorsport-grade wrap film, built for adhesion to raw metal, carbon fibre, and composite panels
Gloss finish laminate, enhancing the reflective quality of the branding for visibility
Temperature-stable application — we carefully heated panels during install to match the race-ready prep of the car
Edge sealing and post-heating to lock in adhesion and reduce lift under aero turbulence

Every panel was cleaned twice — once before wrap, and again mid-way through — to ensure no grit or leftover adhesive could cause bubbling or compromise bond strength.

Highlights & Finishing Touches

A few things that made this job stand out:

Custom wrap around carbon door panels: These panels required extra attention due to their texture and the need for low-tack application techniques.
Track-specific cut lines: Rally cars often require panel removal in the field. We laid the film in such a way that it would not hinder future maintenance or rapid access.
Seamless branding integration: The Perfmet logo was designed to sit perfectly across the side panels and remain legible during high-speed photo ops.

And best of all? The Evo came out of the workshop looking brand-new — but still like it belonged in the dirt.

Challenges During the Job

There were a few very specific hurdles:

Wrap residue from previous installs: Leftover glue and melted film near the exhaust and side skirts needed careful removal with heat and adhesive removers.
Carbon fibre compatibility: Some areas were non-painted composite, requiring adhesion testing before final install.
Maintaining visual symmetry: With racing vehicles, it’s not just about looks — sponsors and branding must stay aligned and spaced for regulations.
Working around rally-specific hardware like roof vents, mudguards, and recovery hooks, which limited standard wrap workflows.

Through all of that, the end product looked clean, aggressive, and made to last.
